EMCOM - SHort for emergency communications

What would you do if...

If all communication with the outside world was down..

  • and the power was out ...
  • and the roads were closed...
  • you have no heat...
  • you have no lights...
  • you have no water...
  • and somebody you love needs help!

The W7RIM radio club operates an Emergency Communications Center at the Heber-Overgaard Fire station, with generator backup. Several of its members have similar capabilities at their homes.

WE CAN GET THE MESSAGE OUT! Whether it's an emergency message to the hospital in Show Low, a specialist in Hawaii, or to just let Aunt Winnie in Phoenix know you're OK, we can do it. Be part of the last line of communications, join soon. We'll help.

When trouble strikes

Tune to 146.800 MHz to stay in contact with the amateur radio community.

  • The Heber/Overgaard repeater uses PL tone 162.2 Hz.  If the repeater is out of service or out of your range, we can still use the repeater output frequency as a simplex channel for local communications.
  • All hams should program both configurations into their radios.  The other primary EmCom channel is the 146.980 MHz ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) repeater on Mt. Elden near Flagstaff.  This is the primary EmCom channel for the Coconino Amateur Radio Club.
  • The Rimlink repeaters also provide good communication across northern Arizona and all the way down into the Phoenix area.  The nearest of these linked repeaters is the 146.720 MHz machine on Greens Peak.
  • Emergency communications on HF are generally on 3990 KHz or 7252 KHz.  These are designated frequencies for Arizona RACES (Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service).
  • The document below (coming) is a draft operational guideline for Heber-Overgaard Fire District Auxiliary Communications (AUXCOMM) activation.

Required ICS Training

  • For FEMA Incident Command Training go to www.fema.gov.
  • Suggested training ICS 100 & 700 (minimum for EMSCOM staffing).
  • The FEMA ICS (Incident Command System) Classes are designed to provide First Responders and other personnel with training prior to a large-scale incident.
  • To be included as a resource during incidents ICS training is required.  ICS training covers many subjects and is interesting learning.
